Color Laser Printer purchased October 2011. Multifunction and wireless. Inexpensive ink. Also replacing my Fujitsu ScanSnap S510.

Replacing Toner

I'm currently using this refill toner, which is considerably cheaper ($90 for high-yield replacements of all four colors), but has been a major pain in the rear to use. I'll probably go back to using cartridges.

Linux

Download and install the Brother Linux drivers. Useful hints are here. In particular:

  • Create the /var/spool/lpd (group owned by lp) first, then install both the LPD and CUPS drivers
  • Install the brscan4 drivers
  • Copy scanner drivers from /usr/lib64/sane/ to /usr/lib/sane/
  • Configure a network scanner using:
    brsaneconfig2 -a name=MFC-9970CDW model=MFC-9970CDW ip=192.168.0.150
  • You can configure hardware scans to automatically go to Linux via brscan-key and scan-key-tool
