Purchased January 2014.

You can't charge and record at the same time, and the batteries only last about two hours, so extra batteries are helpful. You can find Samsung SLB-10a style batteries fairly cheap.

Like the Zoom H1, when you replace the batteries, you often have to reset the date and time.

Records in about 3.2 GB chunks at a time, meaning you have to concatenate. File naming convention:
ZOOM0003.MOV
ZO010003.MOV
ZO020003.MOV
I got a device that had issues with battery drain. Got it replaced.

Comes with a 2GB card, which records about 30 minutes at the best quality (not necessary for good voice recordings). Purchased a Kingston 8GB Class 2 microSDHC card.

I can use it as a USB microphone. Quality is fantastic.

Collab:Topic Maps have the potential to be a wonderful tool for organizing information. The data structure is great, but I have yet to see a good user interface for categorizing data using Collab:Topic Maps.

Wikis have the potential to be that user interface. Wikis are widely used for publishing content both collaboratively and individually, because of their simplicity as a hypertext authoring tool. More importantly, their data structure already bears close resemblance to Collab:Topic Maps, as both can be represented as graphs. Collab:WikiWords often map quite naturally to topics. Links listed on Wiki pages can be thought of as occurrences. More importantly, Forge:Backlinks to Wiki pages can also be thought of as occurrences.

Wikis are used in a number of different ways, most notably as Content Management Systems and as collaborative spaces. When they are used in conjunction with blogs, they act as Collab:Topic Map-like support structures.

I'll use my own blog as an example, but I want to point out that there are several other integrated blogs and Wikis out there. Collab:Chris Dent uses the same system as me in essentially the same way, except he uses MovableType as his blogging tool (I use blosxom). Bill Seitz has hacked ZWiki into what he calls a Wiki Log. Socialtext uses KWiki as the basis for its tool. All of these systems exhibit the same behavior described here.

When I write on my blog, I often use Collab:WikiWords for names of people and concepts. This behavior is quite natural and usually requires little thought. If those Collab:WikiWords exist as pages on my Wiki, then the words link to the appropriate page. If no page exists, I can create the page, just as I would from the Wiki itself.

Over time, I may use the same Collab:WikiWord in several different entries. If that page exists on the Wiki, and if I look at the Forge:Backlinks to that page, it will list all of the blog entries mentioning that Collab:WikiWord. In other words, it maintains a list of occurrences automatically; all I have to do is use Collab:WikiWords as I write.

If you look at the pages on this Wiki, all of the Collab:WikiWords represent concepts that are relevant to me and my writings. All of these pages emerged organically in the process of Story Telling. If you look at the Forge:Backlinks for a Wiki page, you can see all of the contexts in which I use the Collab:WikiWord. For example, if you look at the backlinks for "DougEngelbart", you can see all of the blog entries where I mention him. Those entries tell just as much about the man as the content on the Wiki page itself.

This capability works best over time, where concepts may occur repeatedly in unexpected contexts, and in a collaborative blog and Wiki environment, where it can reveal different usages and interpretations of concepts by different people, thus leading to shared collective understanding.

Using Wikis in this way allow people to create Collab:Topic Map-like structures in an organic, almost transparent manner, providing the benefits of Collab:Topic Maps without requiring people to dramatically change the way they work or the tools they use.

Asides
The Wiki data structure resembles, but is not equivalent to Collab:Topic Maps. In order to make it equivalent, Wikis would need Typed Links, which would enable people to define Collab:Topic Map associations. For example, you would be able to say that Turn Off Your Computer isA Collab:Patterns, where "isA" is a typed link between the two Wiki pages. With this feature (which we eventually plan on implementing in Forge:PurpleWiki), you could export Wiki content as a full-fledged Collab:Topic Map.

Some Wikis have disabled the Collab:WikiWord feature (most notably, Wiki Pedia and Socialtext). I understand the reasoning behind this, but I don't think it's a good idea, especially in the context of Wikis As Topic Maps. more on this later.

Collab:Jack Park's NexistWiki was the first attempt -- to my knowledge -- to generate Collab:Topic Maps using Wikis. RDFWiki does a similar thing with RDF, and it's based on the same observation -- that the Wiki's graph-like data structure resembles RDF.

In 2002, I wrote a paper, "Towards a Standard Graph Model for the Open Hyperdocument System: Enabling Interoperability Between Collaborative Knowledge Applications," that shows that most knowledge tools use a graph-like data structure, and that explores the benefits of standardizing on a metamodel for describing and manipulating graphs.
How should more than one installations of Wiki software interact with each other (whether or not they are running the same version of the software)? That is the key question for Wiki Interoperability. I've been working on a research/vision paper on the topic, which will be released in June 2007.

Hi Eugene. Not really sure if this is the most appropriate way for dialog on your wiki... Please let me know what is.

I am interested in exending your interoprability question to include blogs and forums as well. As a user of Collab:WordPress and Mediawiki, I find myself installing the Mediawiki Markup for Wordpress (http://zechs.dyndns.org/wordpress/?page_id=126) on every blog.

I wonder if we can come up with some kind of universal human markup language that is adopted across all these collaborative tools. An almost natural language that can also elegantly and unambiguously be processed by software.

Thoughts?

The Caviar Black drives are the highest performance 7200 rpm Western Digital drives.

According to the marketing materials, you're not supposed to use these drives in a RAID configuration. Instead, you're supposed to buy the more expensive RAID-specific drives.

The technical difference between these drives is that these drives have Wikipedia:Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) turned off, whereas RAID drives do not. This is a good thing when running non-RAID, but when using RAID, you want the controller to handle the errors, not the drives themselves. With TLER turned off, the drives will timeout and the RAID controller will remove them from the array.

You can turn this feature on using WDTLER.zip, and these drives should work fine in a RAID array. This NewEgg thread has more information. I started with these instructions to create a DOS-bootable CD (or USB key), and I managed to get a bootable ISO with the utilities. Unfortunately, this did not work, because the ISO did not have SATA drivers for my SATA CD-RW drive.

Instead, I followed these instructions for making a FreeDOS bootable CD and installed the WDTLER.zip files there. This worked. When you boot from this CD, make sure you answer "N" to all the boot configuration options. Otherwise, the WDTLER utilities won't work.
Eekimhttps://wiki.eekim.com/w/index.php?title=West_Coast_Computer_Faire&diff=1998West Coast Computer Faire2021-09-13T19:32:39Z
Eekim: 4 revisions imported: Imported from WebFaction on September 13, 2021 with Interwiki prefix Eekim

Installing from CD/DVD-ROMs
In order to access CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs, you have to make sure those are mounted on Linux first. In my setup, when I have VirtualBox running, discs don't automatically mount. This caused some confusion, as I was trying to install some Windows apps, which didn't mount automatically, and so when I tried to access them from Windows, it complained that the "disc may be corrupted." The disc wasn't corrupted; it just wasn't mounted!
When I've played with VirtualBox in the past, in order to install my copy of Windows Vista, which is tied to the BIOS on my Dell Inspiron 531, I've had to configure the BIOS DMI, which I never bothered doing. No need with VirtualBox 3.0! Installation works out of the box. Yeah!

I did have one problem with Vista installation, however. Update returned Error Code 80073712. I found some suggestions on the Internet, and the problem was easily solved.

After successful installation, start the VM and install guest additions by going under Devices and selecting "Install Guest Additions." This will allow more seamless integration between Vista and Linux.

I also configured Shared Folders.

I experimented with another virtual machine, NAS, running Ubuntu server. I wanted to run this headless:

VBoxHeadless -startvm NAS &

I created and installed an init.d script using this script as a starting point.

It worked beautifully, but I realized it was unnecessary.

One potential issue was with disk size. I had configured a 750GB virtual disk, then realized that I didn't know ext3's file size limits. Turns out that for 4KB block sizes (which is what I have), it's 2TB, which was plenty for my needs.
Eekimhttps://wiki.eekim.com/w/index.php?title=Vineman2008&diff=1958Vineman20082021-09-13T19:32:38Z
Eekim: 5 revisions imported: Imported from WebFaction on September 13, 2021 with Interwiki prefix Eekim

Bags
I own three Tom Bihn bags, and I love them all. I have a sapphire Brain Bag, which I acquired in 2008 for my trip to BurdensLanding:India and BurdensLanding:Ethiopia, and which I ended up using as my primary work bag. I use it for camping, too; it's great.

I bought an olive/cayenne Medium Cafe Bag in September 2010 as a day and travel bag. It was inspired by Jessica's extra small Timbuk2 messenger bag. I like Jessica's bag, but they don't make it in the same style anymore. I love the Cafe Bag. Just the right size, it's portable, it's very functional, and it looks great.

I bought a conifer Synapse in March 2013 as a medium day / hiking bag.

I want a small shoulder day bag designed to hold my Pro and a few additional items. It needs to be larger than my Cafe Bag but much smaller than my Brain Bag. The Ristretto seems perfect.

However, I'm also looking for a camera bag for my Olympus OM-D EM-5. Ideally, I'd like it to be the same as my shoulder day bag. The Co-Pilot would be perfect, except it's not quite big enough for my Pro. Apparently, Tom Bihn is currently in the process of designing a slightly larger bag for exactly this purpose, dubbed the "Pilot." I'm guessing it will make its debut sometime in 2013.

Landline
Sonic.net Fusion (unlimited nationwide calling + 20Mbps downstream) since October 29, 2011. Google Voice integration via the OBi110 (purchased October 29, 2011).

Both work and home phone numbers are Google Voice accounts.

History
I was an AT&T customer for basically my whole life. I always kept my landline because I sometimes did phone interviews where I recorded the calls using high-quality (i.e. expensive) equipment. When I started using DSL in 1999, I subscribed to AT&T.

When I started Blue Oxen Associates in 2002, I decided to get Vonage. I switched to the minimal phone plan for AT&T, basically using it for incoming only, and I used Vonage for all outgoing calls. I paid a flat monthly with cheap international rates. The only reason I didn't get rid of my AT&T phone plan was that I was required to have one in order to have DSL.

On April 8, 2010, I canceled my AT&T service and switched to Sonic.net's Fusion service on Jason Cook's recommendation. I hated AT&T for its outages and horrific service. Fusion was completely separate from AT&T and did not require a phone plan. However, Fusion was slightly slower than AT&T, a worthy tradeoff.

Between 2008-2010, Vonage started suffering some serious quality problems. I looked at alternatives, but they were significantly more expensive or inconvenient, and eventually, the quality problems seemed to work themselves out.

In 2011, Sonic.net changed its Fusion plan to include a phone plan and much higher speeds (20Mbps). The plan cost $5 more per month, but I also would have to pay about $11/month in utility taxes. I decided to upgrade, transfer my Vonage number to Google Voice, and buy an OBi device to use Google Voice with my regular phones. I went from paying $60/month ($35 for Fusion + $25 for Vonage) to $51/month (for Fusion) plus a one-time cost of $50 for the OBi hardware. This gets me off Vonage, gets me considerably higher bandwidth, and I get a regular landline, which will be higher quality than Vonage was. I can use Google Voice (via OBi) for international calls, whose rates are cheaper than Vonage's anyway. After five months, I make up the cost of the OBi, and I save $9/month.

I used survs for a very long time, but switched to SurveyMonkey in May 2013. Advantages:

* list them here

However, SurveyMonkey has a very misleading pricing model. It lists monthly rates for its plans, but only its basic premium package can be purchased monthly. All of the other packages are available in annual packages only. And, it does everything it possibly can to trick you into purchasing an annual plan. That really soured me on the tool.
Analysis
SPSS is the Microsoft of data analysis tools. The cheapest license is over $2,000.

R is the open source granddaddy of data analysis tools. There's also PSPP.

And of course, there's always the good ol' fashion spreadsheet. You can do cross-tabs using pivot tables.

Since 2011, I've been using a standing desk, which I created myself using a couple of IKEA platforms. I highly endorse standing desks. When I get tired, I switch to my laptop and sit down somewhere comfortable.
